Find Your Zen

Has the back-to-school grind got you feeling tired and overwhelmed already? Add that to the heaviness in our world as educators, parents, and students. You're not alone, sweet friend! I am feeling it, too. My recommendation?

The Miracle Question!

FIND YOUR ZEN with this beloved counseling hack. It is my favorite solution-focused resource. Use it to streamline your own systems (no counseling experience necessary!), try it out with your staff at your next meeting, or even facilitate it with students (or your own kids) in an age-appropriate manner.

Do YOU believe in miracles?

Regardless of your answer, humor me and play along! Suppose tonight you go to bed and sleep as usual. Only while you are asleep on this particular night, a miracle occurs:

A problem or concern that has been weighing on you has vanished. When you awake, however, you do not realize that this miracle has occurred, but you feel...well, lighter! All feels right in your world. Now, consider the following:

  1. What will be the first thing / Interaction / noticing that tells you a miracle has happened?

  2. How will you know a transformation has occured? What will that look like / feel like / sound like?

  3. In what ways will others recognize that this miracle has taken place in your life?

How to interpret and apply the Miracle Question:

VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES:

  • Get weird with me for a moment and open your mind to this proven therapeutic technique! Whether you’re a vision board gal or someone (like me!) who loves a good journal, find your medium to set your “miracle” into motion

  • Consistency and simplistic practice are the only elements necessary for success. Engage all five of your senses, remove distractions, and stretch those mental muscles to manifest your Miracle Question into a reality...one small, incremental step at a time. You’ve got this!

BE YOUR OWN COACH:

  • You don’t have to be a sports enthusiast to know that the best defense is a good offense. Simply applying the Miracle Question to various facets of your professional and/or personal life can be a game changer.

  • Perhaps you didn’t realize that a certain obstacle was impeding your progress, or maybe it will help you to view “success” through a different lens. No matter what “aha” comes from your Miracle Question, let it be your end goal. Then, design backwards and chip away to make it so!
